Taste of Tennis Part 1: Simon, Paszek and Verdasco

Last night I attended the Taste of Tennis event at the W Hotel for Tennis View Magazine. If you saw my tweets from The Slice, you know just how crazy it was! While most of my interviews will be kept secret (for future issues of the magazine!!) there are some snippets I just had to share. So hope you enjoy this for now (and some pics, courtesy of Tennis View Magazine’s Facebook page).

First up: Gilles Simon, Tamira Paszek and Fernando Verdasco. Gilles and I had a pretty lengthy chat (new besties?) and he tried to give me some advice on how to get my 4-year-old French godson into tennis (and away from football!). Tamira was very sweet and I loved her relaxed attitude about the dog attack. As for Fernando? In retrospect I laugh at myself because I was asking him questions in Spanish and he was answering me in English. Why? I’m not quite sure. But he was great to talk to… and smell.

Gilles Simon
Me: So your son is turning 1 year old in a few days. What kind of special things are you doing to celebrate?
Gilles: Unforunately, I won’t be with him for it. He’s here but he’s gonna leave just before the tournament. And uh, we’re gonna take care of him. Don’t worry. I don’t know yet what we’re gonna do but I know my wife has a lot of ideas about this and she likes to organize it.

Tamira Paszek
Me: So has anyone asked you about the dog yet?
Tamira: Yea!
Me: How are you feeling?
Tamira: I’m ok. I mean, it was bad luck. I don’t blame the animal. The owner was sitting in a bar having a drink. Probably the animal got anxious, stressed, I don’t know what made him do it!
Me: Do you like dogs still?
Tamira: I mean, I grew up with dogs. I love animals. I love my two little dogs at home. I’m very relaxed about it. Luckily nothing serious happened and all the tests were fine in the hospital. Left with a little bruise, three scratches and I’m fine for the Open.

Fernando Verdasco
Me: Have you been doing a lot of shopping?
Fernando: Well, not really. I’ve been walking around but I didn’t really have time. I didn’t even have one day off to go really shopping.
Me: Well when you do have your day off, where are you going to shop?
Fernando: Soho. I used to go to the Soho a lot. And then if I go here uptown I go to Fifth Avenue, of course.
