Today was media day for the WTA at Indian Wells and, since I wasn’t there, I can’t give you great snippets of an interview with Francesca Schiavone. What I can give you are these pictures, graded a la E!’s Fashion Police. Disclaimer: The following grades have nothing to do with the players’ tennis abilities or anything else other than my opinion of their outfits. So here goes:
Vera Zvonareva: Kept it casual and comfortable. The grey is a little drab, but she managed to spice things up with sparkly bunnies. Still, Vera, I’ve seen better on you.
Grade: B-
Li Na: Look up effortlessly chic in the dictionary and you see Li Na. How does she make a Nike t-shirt look so fabulous? And her hair pulled back – nice touch.
Grade: A
Sam Stosur: This outfit is very PacSun meets Oakley meets “I’m one step from hopping on my skateboard.” Since she’s an Aussie I’ll cut her a little slack, and this is a tennis event so casual is ok, but because of the madras-plaid shorts, yellow top, orange shoes, white sunglasses…
Grade: D
Victoria Azarenka: Here’s another one who wears those cute Nike tops and you just can’t fault her for that – they’re cute! I think she’s wearing a white watch too which, because I work in fashion, I can say is very in. I could have done without the “Nike Clash of Champions” hat, but then again, that’s the most I saw of that event.
Grade: A-
Caroline Wozniacki: Sports bra showing? And sweatpants? We get it, Caro – you’re sporty. You probably also just came from practice. We get it, Caro – you’re committed. Would have been nice to see you jazz up your outfits like you jazz up your interviews. With that said, I like the blue.
Grade: C+
Jelena Jankovic: Another one with a white hat? Would have been okay with the outfit without it. Nice bright whites, with an even brighter yellow cardigan, with an even brighter smile. Southern Cali looks good on you, JJ.
Grade: B
Francesca Schiavone: Just a red shirt… and media credentials? I’m just as bored as you, Fran. You should have borrowed JJ’s white hat, then you’d have all the colors of the Italian flag! Boring it may be, but do you really need to wear an interesting outfit to get attention? Nope. Can’t wait to read the transcript.
Grade: B-
Kim Clijsters: Oh, Kim. I could never say anything bad about you. Fila jacket? Fine with me.
Grade: A
Novak Djokovic: Omg, how did this get here? This is clearly in the wrong place… but since it’s here…
Grade: A+++++++++
