Superstar match-ups, comeback against consistency – this was some of the tennis we were supposed to see. Instead, our beloved afternoon of quarterfinals at the BNP Paribas Open was unfortunately cut shorter than fans would have liked.
Match: Caroline Wozniacki vs. Victoria Azarenka, Women’s Quarterfinal
Outcome: 3 games, no sets, match – Wozniacki. Azarenka seemed to have wrong-footed during the beginning of the match, sought treatment and retired with a hip injury while trailing 0-3. The besties embraced at the net. Top-ranked Wozniacki will go on to face Maria Sharapova in the semifinals.
Match: Victoria Azarenka and Maria Kirilenko vs. Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Meghann Shaughnessy, Women’s Doubles Quarterfinal
Outcome: No games, no sets, match – Mattek-Sands/Shaughnessy. Due to Azarenka’s injury, she and Kirilenko were forced to withdraw from their quarterfinals match against Mattek-Sands and Shaughnessy, giving the American team a walkover to the semifinals.
Match: Juan Martin del Potro vs. Tommy Robredo, Men’s Quarterfinal
Outcome: No games, no sets, match – del Potro. The 25th seeded Robredo sent a shock when he withdrew before his quarterfinal took place because of a left abductor muscle he injured his match yesterday against Sam Querrey. The disappointed Robredo is also out of the Miami tournament, while del Potro is into the semifinals, where he’ll face either world No.1 Rafael Nadal or Ivo Karlovic.
