Zarina Diyas of Kazakhstan just turned 17 on Monday and, as a belated birthday gift to herself, upset the number 1 seed Jelena Jankovic in the Kremlin Cup in Moscow, Russia. The teenager defeated the Serbian 6-1, 6-2.
Currently ranked 268 in the world, Diyas has been ranked as high as 194 (July 5, 2010). Her biggest career success up to this point was a quarterfinal appearance at the 2009 Prague Open (lost to Benesova 6-4, 6-1).
After qualifying for the Kremlin Cup, Diyas upset world no. 49 Gisela Dulko in the first round 6-3, 6-7, 7-6. She crushed Jankovic in 59 minutes, and will go on to face 6th seed Maria Kirilenko in the quarterfinals.
