Having just expressed our trepidation about seeing Serena Williams out and about but still wearing a brace to protect her foot, it is with disappointment (but not much surprise) that we have learned that Williams officially withdrew from the U.S. Open today after being advised by her doctors to give her foot more time to heal.
Our advise to tennis players: Try to avoid potentially career-ending freak accidents involving glass! Last autumn, Sam Querrey fell through a glass table and wasn’t able to hit his stride again until well into 2010. Then, just last month, Serena cut her foot on a piece of broken glass at a restaurant and has not played in a tournament since. This is one developing trend in tennis that we fervently hope does not continue!
