Finals day at Legg Mason Sunday began with a great doubles match-up of Mardy Fish and Mark Knowles against Tomas Berdych and newlywed Radek Stepanek. The Czech team of Berdych and Stepanek were on fire in the first set, winning it 6-4. Both teams played equally well, but the Czechs seemed to have come out of the locker room looking more fresh (maybe because Fish and Knowles were up late for the Semifinal match the night before).

The crowd was definitely pro Fish and Knowles, barely cheering for the Czech team except, in some instances, when the play was outstanding. Pictured above is doubles veteran Mark Knowles serving.

Stacey Gardner, aka Mrs. Fish, sat court side to cheer on her husband. She kept cool under the hot sun with a Geico fan.

After a tight second set tie-break win and an even tighter third-set win, Fish and Knowles prevailed to win the doubles title at the Legg Mason Tennis Classic.

Mardy Fish did the “fire log” over Mark Knowles as Berdych and Stepanek looked on. Cheesy? Yes. But if Roger Federer can do it (to partner Stanislas Wawrinka after winning the Men’s Doubles Gold Medal at the Beijing Olympics), so can Fish. More appropriate would have been Knowles doing the “go fish” dance move to Mardy. Maybe next time?
The two stood with their trophies. Stepanek and Berdych mentioned they wanted to come back and win it next year because their second-place trophies were “too small.”
